The Forth Bridge is a railway bridge over the Firth of Forth, 14km, West of Edinburgh. It is
often called the "Forth Rail Bridge" to distinguish it from the road
bridge which bear the same name.
The first crossing goes probably back to the Romans with a boat bridge. A regular ferry operated at Queensferry as early as the 12th century. The railway first crossed the Forth via a ferry installed by Thomas Bouch in 1850. Bouch also designed a suspension railway bridge at Queensferry. But the collapse of the Tay Bridge in 1879 for which he was also the engineer brought a halt to the works. A completely redesigned bridge was started in 1883 and remains today one of the world's most distinctive structures.
| Le Forth Bridge est un pont ferroviaire enjambant le Firth of Forth, 14 km à l'Ouest d'Edinburgh. Il est également appelé le "Forth Rail Bridge" afin de le distingué du pont routier qui porte le même nom. La première traversée remonte probablement à l'époque romaine avec un pont flottant. Dès le XIIè siècle un ferry régulier assurait la traversée l'estuaire. Initialement le chemin de fer traversait l'estuaire par un ferry construit par Thomas Bouch en 1850. Bouch conçu également un pont suspendu à Queensferry. Cependant l'effondrement du Pont Tay dont il fut également l'ingénieur mit un arrêt aux travaux. Un pont complètement reconçu fut construit à partir de 1883 et est encore aujourd'hui un des ouvrages d'art le plus remarquable du monde.
